Mayday Mayday: Invasion of the Climate Snatchers...
1st May 2008 - Day of Action Against False Solutions to Climate Change
Nuclear Power
Nuclear power is not an effective solution to climate change.
Nuclear power contributes to meeting less than 5% of the world's total energy needs and under 20% of the world's electricity. Nuclear power does cause greenhouse emissions. These occur during mining, transport, construction of power stations, the processing required to convert the uranium ore into fuel rods, waste management and other stages of the nuclear cycle. It is a myth that the nuclear industry is greenhouse neutral.
Uranium reserves are finite and could last less than 50 years. More energy (and greenhouse emissions) would be required to extract uranium from poorer quality deposits. Meanwhile the idea of using fast breeder reactors which generate their own fuel has completely failed - there are no fast breeder reactors in operation in the world.
Nuclear power is highly centralised and inappropriate for many communities. It is only possible as part of a system of large power plants feeding a large grid.
Nuclear Power is dangerous and expensive. It produces radioactive toxic waste, which there is no proven way of storing safely for the next 1000 years. It increases the availibility of deadly materials which is then used for nuclear wepons manufacture.
